Something to keep you warm as the weather turns chillier, lightly spiced apple juice stewed on the campfire.
By Hannah Farr
As autumn creeps along, the air is quickly developing it's signature winter chill! This mulled apple juice is a perfect autumnal treat that is sure to keep little hands and bodies warm. It's really simple to make and can easily be left warming on the campfire during your forest school session or time outdoors. It's also a great opportunity to talk to children about different spices, which countries they come from and what part of the plant we use in cooking.
Ingredients you'll need:
4L Apple juice
The peel of 1 Orange
Root ginger
2 Cinnamon sticks
Cloves (we used 5 but after tasting feel you could happily add more if wanted)
Equipment you'll need:
A Campfire! (Ideally one that is well established and has a low flame or has reduced to hot embers)
Fire Gloves - For hooking and unhooking the cooking pot
Method
Light your campfire and allow to become established.
Peel and slice some root ginger.
Peel an orange, keeping the rind in long strips.
Pour the apple juice into the cooking pot.
Add the peel and spices.
Put the cooking pot over the fire, cook the juice gently for a minimum of 15 minutes (until steaming, but don't allow to boil) you can adjust the height of your cooking pot to reduce the cooking temperature using your tripod chain.
Serve intomugs, making sure to avoid serving the spices, and enjoy the hand warmer!
Top Tips!
The longer you leave it on the heat, the more the flavours will get a chance to infuse, so you can taste after 15 minutes and leave longer if you would prefer a stronger spice flavour.
The apple juice can be very hot when first served so ensure you check the temperature before handing out to little ones.
